74There are many types of nursing careers available but before discussing them you need to know what nursing means in general. The definition of nursing according to the American Nurses Association (ANA) is as follows. Nursing means promotion, protection, optimization of abilities and health, prevention of injury and illness, alleviation of suffering with the help of treatment and diagnosis of human response. Moreover it is an encouragement to take care of families, individuals, population and communities.
Therefore, nursing careers are considered as great profession and there are numerous specialties that you can choose from. For most of the specialties, you would need to pass a series of practical and written exams or complete OJT (on-the-job) training. The main job of the nurse is to take care of the patient and so they are mainly employed in clinics and hospitals.
A lot of work is performed by the nurses. They work 24 hours daily to take care of the patients who are admitted in the hospitals. They also provide care for the newly born babies and mothers, patients in intensive and critical care, emergency room patients, and patients recovering from surgery. They also work in the offices of the doctors, ambulatory clinics and surgery centers. Thus, there are vast nursing careers available.
Basically, they are like the advocates of the patient. The doctors order them to take care of the patient in a certain way and the nurses make it a point that the advice is followed. Among the nursing careers some nurses choose administration. They work in hospitals but in the business side. These nurses are in charge of ordering supplies, scheduling the daily routine of the nurses, maintaining budgets etc.
A few of them also work with lawyers or insurance companies reviewing cases and files. These “desk jobs” are generally preferred because they are offered stable hours and also do not have to work on weekends or at night. If you choose the nursing careers to work in the administrative field then you would require a bachelor degree in nursing.
One function of the nurse is also that of educators. They educate the patient on how to take medicines or what care should be taken after discharge. While others teach in classroom to the rest of the new nurses and they have doctoral or masters degree in nursing. This is one of the nursing careers which are sought after by many nurses.
Some nurses pursue clinical researches which are basically designed by universities or pharmaceutical companies. These nurses can conduct patient assessments or review patient charts for obtaining the research data. They assist in publishing research studies for private companies or non-profit groups who are related to health industry.
There are also certified Anesthetist nurses. They are responsible to administer anesthesia for patients who are about to undergo surgical procedures. Also there are certified Midwife nurses. They take care of the maternity section in a hospital and provide gynecological examinations, labor and delivery of babies etc. These are a few of the nursing careers that you can pursue.
